If you
haven’t notice, The Evangenitals are on a bit of a hiatus. Brett is
working a film editing gig, the Valentine’s Season has meant that Lisa
got consumed by her Flower Industry job, George has been makin’ bucks playing with Cash’d Out,
and I’ve been trying to get my life in order and figure out what I
really want to be doing with it at this point in time. I think everyone
needed a big ‘ol break after the Road to Oprah
tour. Although, I am already excited about the next tour we take. I
really liked touring, which is a good thing, considering that we’re the
type of band, I’m told, that is really going to make our mark (and
money) on the road. I’m glad I’m cut out for it!

On Monday I’m meeting with a man from USC to talk about possibly doing something with my next theater piece there, which is super-exciting.  On Tuesday I’m starting some mime/musical theater/improv/choreography/modern dance classes at my local city college, part of the ‘ol "honing my instrument" routine.  My new improv dream-team "Hammerspace" started getting together to practice for our upcoming show on March 8th.  I’m working on a bunch of new songs for the Evangenitals.  My student loan checks came in.  It’s Valentine’s Day and I’m in LOVE.  I’d have to say things are going alright!

Yes, you heard me right…. I’m taking MIME!!

The Collaboration Foundation (aka The 1 Second Film’s parent organization) is currently on the front page of IdeaBlob.  If we get enough votes, we could win $10,000 toward our "Idea"… which would be amazing.  So please vote for the Collaboration Foundation if you have a moment to register and vote.

Today I got totally inspired and started seriously pursuing some more Evangenitals radio play for our new album.
I sent out a gang of emails and got some good responses, so that’s
promising. Tomorrow I’ll be getting a bunch of CD’s "radio ready" and
sending them off on their fantastic voyage onto the airwaves! I figure
that’s something I can really get into while the band is taking a
break. That and launching semi-complicated sales.  Ahh… to be obsessed.

On Myspace, the Evangenitals are approaching the 30,000 view mark, which seems like it should be some kind of a big deal.

Evangina is in the planning stages of a covers album, and the long-awaited Evangina album PEAS should be available on iTunes any minute!

So things are good, right?

How are you?

The deep blue sea and me…

February 12th, 2008 by julicrockett

I just finished watching a BBC documentary about the Ocean called "The Blue Planet".
It’s friggin’ incredible. This segment was on the "Open Ocean" –
sharks and dolphins and all kinds of other hunters and predators out
there in the seeming wasteland that is the open ocean. I saw bigger
schools of sharks than I’ve ever seen on film before and seabirds that
were sounding to depths of more than 15 meters. Absolutely incredible.
Watching stuff like that always makes me really happy that I’m a vegan now. :-)

I’m really stoked to get back to watching Patrick’s "Prehistoric Beasts"
DVD’s that he brought. That series (also by the jolly ‘ol BBC) is
friggin’ incredible as well. So much good stuff to watch and learn!

We had our first improv practice today for our newly formed super-group "Hammerspace" that is going to be performing at the iO WEST on March 8th at 11:30pm in the Andy Dick Experimental Black Box.
Save the date! Or don’t… cuz I’m sure to be reminding everyone with
ears when the time grown nearer. That show is about a week before Lisa
and I go to SXSW, and I hear there’s a chance that Joey Ninja of Ninja Academy might be coming along to play with us, which would be ludicrous.

Practice
was really good for a first practice, even though Patrick and I both
felt super-stiff and utterly bland. Ah well, that’s what improv class
is for, and I’ve got mine tomorrow night! I’m also starting a NEW
(additional) improv class at PCC
next week, and I’m pretty excited to be going back to a campus. Yay for
school libraries! We’re also hoping to take advantage of some of the
open rehearsal space there for both improv practice and the History of
Water piece. Yay for resourcefulness and low-budget living!

My
student loan money finally came in today, so I was able to do really
important stuff like pay my rent… FINALLY! Tomorrow I am in desperate
need of a smog check, as my registration tags are expired and I’ve
already racked up TWO "fix it" tickets that have to be settled by the
end of the week. Aye! I hope I pass. Also on the list of things to do
is tune-ups for our bikes and buying student metro passes, right after
I pick up my student ID, so I can stop driving that dang car anyhow and
start riding bikes and taking the train as many places as possible.
Hooray!

I stopped by Evangenitals drummer George Bernardo’s
place today and got to visit for a bit. There are some exciting
developments on the horizon… such as a music video we’re planning
with Den and Nika Serras of Matterworks and some new recordings of tunes from the Road to Oprah tour to accompany the HUNDREDS OF HOURS OF VIDEO that has been shot.

There’s a chance that I may start performing with the Johnny Cash tribute band Cash’d Out, whom Georgie has been drumming with, filling in as their June Carter
for the LA & OC region. This, of course, would be like wet dream #4
come true for me, so I’m pretty friggin’ excited at the prospect. I’m
currently working on learning the parts for 30+ Johnny Cash, Carter
Family, and June Carter tunes, and I’ve almost got them all down. Some
day soon, if lady luck shall shine upon me, I will be up there crooning
them oldies with probably the greatest Johnny Cash tribute band there
is. Glory be!

And to top it all of, I’m writing new songs, reading new books, and working on telling the world about The 1 Second Film.  Amen.

make every day a pilates day…

February 9th, 2008 by julicrockett

Today I woke up (earlier than has been usual - I’ve been staying up
REALLY late), wrote in my journal (my REAL journal, not online stuff),
and did PILATES!  Yes yes YES!

Any
day that starts with Pilates is a success, dammit! I used to be much
more regular with the Pilates when Lisa and I were neighbors and we
could start every day the Pilates way… *sigh* now I have to self-motivate.  I think my impending Modern Dance class is quite the motivation!  Yee-haw.

THEN…
I canceled my cable (hooray!) which made sense, seeing as Patrick and I
stopped watching television 2 months ago, and went by The 1 Second Film office to drop off some tapes from the Road to Oprah tour and our bomb-ass fund-raiser at Mr T’s Bowl with 8-Bit and saw some awesome new videos that they are working on, went to Target and bought an actual HOME PHONE (which is going to be ye ‘ol "business line" for the Evangenitals central office) which will hopefully reduce my exposure to tumor-causing cell-phone radio micro-waves.

THEN… my friend and frequent actor in the theater I create Shaughn Buchholz came and picked me up and we went off to PCC to see Patrick’s play.  Post-play, one of the gals in the cast, who happened to be a huge fan of the show "Scrubs"
(that Shaughn had the recurring role of ‘Jason "Cabbage" Cabbaggio’ on
for a bit) and happened to be a HUGE fan of Shaughn’s character, came
out to have her picture taken with him, which was awesome. I love those
moments of excitement and joy, on both sides. As Shaughn pointed out,
actors spend most of their time auditioning for parts that they DON’T
get, so to have someone get real excited about the work that you DID do
is pretty nice.

Now we’re going to get down with some "Glengarry Glen Ross".  Awww, yeah.

FYI: Patrick’s play closes tomorrow night, so if anyone lives in the LA-area and wants to check it out, there’s a matinee at 2pm and I’ll be at the 8pm show.

Peas,
Juli

Alright, I admit it…

I’m
a little nervous about our Universal Citywalk gig tomorrow night.
There’s supposed to be a LOT of people there, we’re playing a big ‘ol
rock stage, and I’m not sure which t-shirt I should wear.

That what I call a LUXURY problem, people.  :-)

I hope to see some friendly faces there, other than the ones on stage with me, of course.

Gotta
take deep breaths and let the goodness flow through me. It’s time for
the big time! This is just another step of many steps that came before
toward the shining and glorious glory of the next step on the path to
the great whatever-the-fuck that’s coming…. and I’m loving every
minute of it.

Rock on.

I just got home from the El Cid show and I’ve already uploaded the photos for your viewing pleasure!

It
was a great, short, barn-burner set. I wore my long-sleeved cowboy
shirt and paid the price by getting some sweaty pits from all my
running about.

I figure it proves I was working hard. :-)

Thanks to those of you who came out to the show, played along, and for all the hooting and hollering.

If you missed it, this photo set (taken by Patrick Ian Moore) actually gives a pretty good idea of just what went on over there.

Hope
to see you all next weekend at the Old Towne Pub. Until then, please
enjoy, comment on, spread around all these Evangenitals pics that I’ve
been obsessively uploading onto Flickr.

A
real nice story just hit the streets about my band, The Evangenitals,
and our upcoming appearance at Universal Citywalk’s Summer Block Party,
sponsored by Indie 103.1 and Music Connection Magazine.

Please
take a moment to rate the story on the Entertainment Today website
(preferably with high marks) and DIGG this link as well:

press surrounding the Evangenitals, our new album, and our biggest gig thus far at Universal Citywalk keeps on rolling in!

In
other news, we’re making our first appearance in conjunction with the
festivities of Sunset Junction this Sunday night!  If you happen to be

The Hero’s Journey

July 24th, 2007 by julicrockett

1. A call to adventure, which the hero has to accept or decline
2. A road of trials, regarding which the hero succeeds or fails
3. Achieving the goal or "boon," which often results in important self-knowledge
4. A return to the ordinary world, again as to which the hero can succeed or fail
5. Application of the boon, in which what the hero has gained can be used to improve the world

Let’s do this!

The Evangenitals (aka The Love Punks)

Busy, busy I bees

July 7th, 2007 by julicrockett

So much is going on, I don’t have much time to share about it.

I started working full-time with The 1 Second Film, plotting our upcoming Road To Oprah cross-country bio-diesel 10,000+ mile adventure.

The Evangenitals will probably be traveling as "The Love Punks"
considering that we’re going to be heading straight through the Bible
Belt and visiting Oprah Winfrey. We don’t want the name of the band to
be any sort of distraction from the amazing cause and vision that The 1
Second Film represents.

In other news, I started taking classes at IO West and have become utterly obsessed with long-form improv.  Tonight Ptryxxx and I are going to go see "The Lampshades" which stars my improv teacher Scot Robinson (who was also in Anchorman) and Meredith from The Office, aka Kate Flannery.

I have to go to the xBiz summer forum
at the HardRock in Vegas next week for my "other" job, and then my
sister is getting married in Florida on the 22nd. I saw her wedding website,
and it is just plain surreal. This will be the first time in a LONG
time that all the Crockett’s are going to be in the same place at the
same time. Hopefully the wedding cruise doesn’t sink and take us all to
Davey Jones’ locker.

I have to admit thoughts like that when
they occur to me, or else I am afraid that they will actually happen,
and then I’ll be dying thinking, "are you fucking kidding me? I totally
called that!"

What else?

After a strange period of
seeming song-writer’s block, a bunch of new material is starting to
flow out of me. I’m writing a new love song about Ptryxxx that has was
may be the cutest subtly vegan choral hook that was ever written.

Newlywed
Jeff Jones is going to return to the Evangenitals for a mellow yellow
coffee house set at Highland Perk on July 28th! I’ve decided that we’re
going to make this gig an open-house, sing-a-long, play-a-long,
Evan-hootenanny! After so much rocking so far this year (and much more
rocking to come with another Molly Malones gig and the Evangenitals
playing Universal Citywalk’s Block Party on September 1st) we thought
it would be nice to have a calm, sit down with coffee evening where we
can share favorite songs, simple chords, and tell some stories about
how these songs were written and why.

Lastly, I just bought some red and purple vegan/animal friendly Manic Panic hair dye and I’m thinking I may do something crazy with it this weekend.  :-)

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

May 24th, 2007 by julicrockett

I’m looking FORWARD to THINGS!  To STUFF that’s on the HORIZON!  I’m in
love with many of the things that are happening NOW and I’m
super-excited about things that are COMING SOON.  Heck, I’m still
reeling with glee from things that JUST HAPPENED!

The Evangenitals show at Molly Malones last Saturday was awesome.  It was like a whole new level of Evangenital
action — simultaneously a reminder of how awesome things used to be,
are, and will be.  It was a bizarre time/space intersection wherein I
was reminded of all things great about being an Evangenital.  How awesome it is that people actually show up, listen, cheer, and give us so much love and support.

Today I talked to a booker in Florida who absolutely did not respond to the mojo of the Evangenitals.
It was kinda crazy… a first for me, that got me all hot faced and
heart pounding whilst making me excited for the FUTURE!  For MORE
disbelieving promoters and bookers that don’t see/hear/feel/believe in the power of the Evangenitals
.  Hooray!  There was a time in the beginning where it was important
that NO ONE say anything critical about the Genitals.  We were so
fragile and new.  If someone had told me that we sucked and should give
it up 2 months into the project, I may have believed them.  But here we
are, years later, and after so many big ‘ol smiles, crazy gigs, opened hearts, and loving responses to what we do… I’m a believer.  There’s something going on with the Evangenitals.  It’s a movement, and we’re all a part of it.

After that call, the booker from Molly Malones called and invited us back for another show, we got invited up to Seattle to play in September, Wanni booked a gig for us in Jacksonville that we’ll be able to hit after our Tampa show, and Nirvan from the 1 Second Film
sent me a map that outlined the route that he’s thinking we’ll take on
the Road Trip to Oprah!  So, the good energy won in the end.  When it
rains, it pours.  :-)

I must say that I feel pretty good about
the fact that throughout the conversation with the "nonbeliever" I
managed to let my love light shine, full blast, and not get flustered
by any of the seeming insults and gruffness that were being thrown my
way.  I’m working on getting better at talking with people and
representing/promoting the band in person.  It’s funny, considering
that I’ve been doing this big ‘ol Marketing job for the past few years,
promoting the hell out of a business, and I do a grand job at that.
The real magic is going to happen when I can take all of those skills
I’ve developed — feeling confident and boldly promoting someone else’s project/company — and apply them to OUR project.  The Holy Evangenitals.
